On Tuesday, November 10th, Sandy Lake Academy held a ceremony to commemorate Remembrance Day. This very important day is in place to honour those who fought and sacrificed for our freedom. We had a ceremony in the morning, with commemorative music, a reading of “In Flanders Fields”, and laying of wreaths and poppies. A message was also shared by special guest, Petty Officer First Class M. Jules Staal (MSE Chief, HMCS Windsor), who spoke of his experiences in the Royal Canadian Navy.
Remembrance Day first came into existence under a slightly different name, Armistice Day; first observed as a day of remembrance in Buckingham Palace on November 11, 1919. The date was picked due to the signing of the Armistice that ended the First World War, signed on the “11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month” in 1918. This agreement put a formal end to hostilities in what was the deadliest conflict in human history up to that point; the casualties of which would unfortunately be eclipsed its grim successor, the Second World War. Remembrance Day is in place to remember those who have fought for us.
